In these excerpts I learned that not only were slaves auctioned off, they could also be “rented” for a short time to others that needed help with manual work. When working for these temporary masters, the person could treat the slaves however they wanted to. Slaves also had to deal with being abused by their owner and deciding whether to just take the punishment or risk their life to stand up for themselves.
