How do people feel accomplished when they are just following the pattern that society has forced upon them? Let’s imagine the timeline of the “perfect American life,” first comes childhood, then secondary school, higher education, a humble job, beautiful marriage, children that need to follow this template of life, retire then die. Americans have striven for the “American dream” since 1776, but why? People have changed their beliefs, migrated from their homes, gone through hell and back to reach success. Yet what wonders through my mind is, why does American success only come from one path? How can we glorify all success? We can start by allowing our own personal idea of success to be success in the eyes of others. Instead of falling in line of the ideal success, make your own goals and get there the way that is most efficient for the individual. A quote from “thinking, fast and slow” by Daniel Kahnamen says, “A reliable way of making people believe in falsehoods is frequent repetition, because familiarity is not easily distinguished from truth.” Instead of believing that we should follow this pattern, discover the truth that will help you succeed. How can we alter this pattern and discover our pattern? I have come up with a new system that will help anyone shape their own way. First, discover what your goals are. Maybe you want to travel the world, teach others about your religion, dedicate your life to someone else or maybe even have a white picket fence. Second, come up with steps to get you there. Take all the time you need because it’s your time, no one else’s. Don’t let society tell you when you need to do something, switch it around. Third, find happiness in your success. Don’t let success be material, but prideful and accomplished. In conclusion, the “American pattern success” isn’t the only success. Don’t let different factors change your future. Whether you feel society is dragging you down or not glorifying your triumph, don’t fall into the basic patter.
