Most didn’t say anything directly to me would give the stink eye. An older man did walk by and say the food taste so great you can’t close your mouth before laughing and saying enjoy your guy’s meal. The woman and her husband I told her kids that what we were doing was an example of not how to act in public. Surprisingly nobody was too harsh except for the person who told the manager on us, it’s like mind your business, or look away, but anyway after I started it wasn’t too bad. What I learned is breaking a norm is very uncomfortable and in an American culture breaking these norms can lead to very awkward stares and situations. I don’t like doing something that isn’t socially excepted and being judged by it. I want to be myself, so by breaking the social norm I wasn’t being myself and it was uncomfortable forcing myself to act different than I would normally act. This assignment for me at least, made me come out of my comfort zone and do something I wouldn’t normally do, and get an idea of what it might be like for someone from a foreign country might experience. Other countries have different norms, so something that might be ok in their culture is not ok in our culture. So, this would be something I might experience if I were to travel to a different country.
