Throughout the book “The Great Gatsby”, there are many arguments that Fitzgerald makes about American Society. One is the topic of decay, which centers around the death of the American dream. Another is violence, which exerts dominance between the characters. Lastly, is the topic of class and how it represents people’s importance in society. Decay is present for the biggest part in the “valley of ashes”. This part has little to do with New York and represents the downfall of the American society.
