One of the ways they dehumanized the prisoners of the camp was by starving them and Elie would even say “we were withered trees in the heart of the desert”(Weisel 37) because of how shriveled up and malnourished they were. This affects Elie emotionally and physically because the loss of food completely changes Elie’s mindset. he says “At that moment in time, all that mattered to me was my daily bowl of soup, my crust of stale bread.
