Deviance is any behavior, trait, or belief that violates social norms. It can be criminal or non-criminal. In Grey’s Anatomy there are several examples of social deviance. Meredith Grey is the main character. In the beginning she starts out as an intern at a hospital. Her deviance act is engaging in a sexual relationship with her boss at work, Derek Shepard. This can be considered deviant because Meredith is very new at this job, only being an intern. She sleeps with Derek to find out he is superior to her at work. In society, sleeping with your boss is looked down upon. Another example of Meredith being deviant is when she continues to have this relationship with Derek to find out he has a wife in Manhattan. In society, women are perceived to have simpler jobs, such as being a stay at home mom. Grey’s Anatomy shows how women are just as skilled as the male surgeons and are capable of many things. Also, the characters identify themselves differently with their sexuality. Callie is bi-sexual and Arizona is Homosexual. Callie and Arizona get married at one point and have a child. They are both normal people and are very successful. The show expresses that no matter how you identify yourself everyone is equal. It is common and accepting to identify differently with sexuality in Grey’s Anatomy just as it is becoming more accepting in today’s society. Another example is the idea of motherhood. In society, women are expected to conceive a child. Grey’s Anatomy expresses how it is a choice and up to the women if they want a child. For example, Christina Yang, she never wants kids because she believes it will interfere with her work as a surgeon. She is not willing to risk her work for a child, which should be acceptable in society. On the other hand, Meredith has multiple kids and at one point it affects her job and ability to work.
