Executions. Hangings. Torture. Accusations. Salem Witch Trials. Discrimination. These are just a few of the things that happened in the Puritan society in the 17th century. The Puritans were some of the first settlers from Europe to come to the New World to escape the leaders of a church in England who, not only controlled their public lives, but their private lives too. In an ironic twist, the Puritans did the same thing to the settlers. If the First Amendment in the Bill of rights existed, how would life have been different? Life in the Puritan society with the establishment clause would have made life for Mary Dyer and those executed much better, more civilized, and similar to life today because they would have been able practice their religion …show more content…
They couldn't do anything they wanted to. All because of making an official law you had to live by.n“Church leaders dictated what people could wear and how they should behave, both in public and inside the home.” (Silencing of Mary Dyer 8) This quote from the Silencing of Mary shows that the Church was so controlling over the colonist since Christianity had become what the government was based on. By basing their government by Christianity, and telling people what to do and what not to do, the Church leaders could control people like string dolls. No one would have died because they were either an accused witch or a Quaker since the reasons behind their deaths would have been illegal. “Gov. Endecott saw no way around it: He announced that any Quaker entering Massachusetts Bay Colony be put to death.” (Silencing of Mary Dyer 10) This quote from the Silencing of Mary Dyer shows that because Quakers believed differently than the Puritans form of Christianity, that they needed to be irradiated from the Colony. This was called Institutionalized Discrimination, which means it's legal or the law to discriminate against certain people because of their race, religion ideas, and nationality, just to name a few. Since Quakers believed differently from most of the colony, since they didn't want to defy the law and became the strict form on Christianity, they all wanted the Quakers gone
