Today, students are encouraged to join as many clubs and organizations as they can. Involvement in the community and school demonstrates leadership and time management to potential colleges. However, there are also some downfalls to extracurriculars in schools. Holden Caulfield, the protagonist in The Catcher in the Rye, demonstrates one of these downfalls at his school Pencey Prep. Although extracurricular activities have a way of bringing students together, Holden feels alienated from his peers. Furthermore, Holden shows signs of his feelings of alienation in the first couple of pages of the novel. After Holden is kicked out of the school he wants to make
