Jack Merridew; Guilty of Crimes Against Humanity
Humans will be held responsible for their actions even, when their inner savage tempts them to act in an uncivilized manner. Crimes against humanity are defined as: serious offences that can include attacks on human dignity, humiliation and, the murder of at least one person that is allowed by the government (United Nations untreaty.un.org). Throughout William Golding’s Lord of the Flies, Jack Merridew is permitted by the government created to humiliate and cause the deaths of multiple boys and, therefore is guilty of crimes against humanity. Following a conflict between Piggy and Jack, Piggy fell and, “Jack mimicked the whine and scramble…the hunters began to laugh” (Golding 76). Jack’s imitation of Piggy labeled him as a joke, not to be taken seriously and the affirmation he received ensured that, “Jack felt encouraged. He went on scrambling” (Golding 76). Reinforcing Jack’s wrongdoings with positive feedback progressed his descent into savagery because he knew he could get away with this conduct. Also, it increased the shame Piggy felt because no one supported him or took him seriously and, they preferred to watch him be mocked because they thought that, “Piggy and the parody were so funny” (Golding 76). Due to Jacks attacks on Piggy, he is becomes isolated from the group even further and the government’s cultured mindsets are tainted by Jack’s choices, which, make them crueler. Truly, although their laughter encouraged him, Jack had the option to end the joke and didn’t and so he is responsible for Piggy’s discredit and the decay of the governments previous cultivated
