Throughout my life, I have overcome several obstacles. One of the most challenging obstacles I endured was becoming a teen mom at the young age of sixteen. During this time, I did not know that I was up against. Approximately, one third of teenaged females in the United States become pregnant, and once pregnant, are at increased risk of becoming pregnant again (Basch, 2011). I did not realize that I would face all the challenges and sacrifices that came along with being a teen mom. Not knowing what to expect I was an emotional wreck, I felt helpless and I wanted to give up. I did not know how to care for a newborn as I was still a child myself, and I did not want to fail as a mother.
Teen pregnancy is associated with adverse educational health and economic outcomes for both mothers and children. Teens that become pregnant are less likely to complete high school or college; many are on a trajectory for these educational outcomes even before becoming pregnant. I was resilient. Resilience is the development of psychological strength to assist the individual to overcome and grow from challenges (Harrington, 2012). It requires a close review of the environment in which the person exists and an honest examination of oneself.
