What is Shared Humanity? Shared Humanity is something that binds us as humans together. Shared Humanity is an experience. All people have this in common. This experience happens everywhere people go, someone finds a way to reach others, and they become a friend. People do specific things to reach another, but our Shared Humanity deepens that connection. Shared Humanity consists of Loss, Morality, Survival, Emotions, Choice, and Relationships. Novels, movies, and media in general are great example givers of Shared Humanity values. One such novel is How I Live Now, by Meg Rosoff.
In the novel How I live Now, by Meg Rosoff, demonstrates how human relationships and moralities can change when in time of distress. Morality throughout the book starts to change when the war starts. People do dumb things when they either find it funny or in a stressful situation. A man harassing guards during the war was shot.The guards had no problem shooting this man. When a friend tried to retrieve his body, the guards killed him as well. “Mostly furious that because of him being such a fool, Major Mac had to die”(Rosoff 107). In war people lose a lot, an example would be the Holocaust. People lost their lives, homes, family, possessions, and friends. During the war in How I live Now, Daisy’s english family lost their home, each other, and their possessions. When the main character Daisy lost Edmond that was a breaking point. When she was separated from him she did everything in her power to get back to him. She worked for the army for a while, she even demanded an army Major for information on where Edmond was and how to reach him. This not only shows loss but also shows another Shared Humanity trait relationship. This shows a strong bond between each other when you would risk your life in a war zone to reach your loved
