Many characters in the book commit these despised sins. The three sins I will be writing about are lust, envy, sloth, and covetousness. You will notice that one character may commit more than one sin. One specific character commits many of these sins.

Williams has committed lust. Abigail Williams and John Proctor had an affair. But this was a point of weakness for Mr. Proctor for he does not love Abigail. Miss Abigail Williams commits this sin as well when she envies Elizabeth Proctor because she is in love with her husband. Reverend Parris commits this sin because he believes he should hold a higher position in the church deserves more money and more attention. Thomas Putnam envies his neighbors for their abundance and puts his neighbor’s lives at risk to claim it.
The definition of covetousness or greed is the desire for material wealth or gain, ignoring the realm of the spiritual. Abigail, who we know now has committed many sins has once again also committed this one. She has a desire for John Proctor and is very willing to steal him from Elizabeth. Once again Thomas Putnam is brought up he so desperately wants his neighbors land and is a very greedy and selfish man. Reverend Parris is greedy he is all about the money and believes he deserves way more many than he is receiving and also believes he deserves more recognition. All of the young girls in the crucible are greedy because of their growing desire for greed and power. This desire is fulfilled by the reaction of the townspeople and higher authorities.
