In the story, “The Great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzgerald, there are many themes relayed throughout the book. “The Great Gatsby” shows the a great example of what the American dream was like in the 1920’s. One of the most profound examples of this theme is that Gatsby is striving to live the American Dream. The ideal that every US citizen should have an equal opportunity to achieve success and prosperity through hard work, determination and initiative. “Cody was 50 years old then, a product of the Nevada silver fields, of the Yukon, of every rush of metal since seventy-five”(99.) Mr. Cody was a very wealthy man who came from old money. He took Gatsby along with him, after they met in an unexpected way. They went on many voyages together. Cody showed Gatsby all the things that you could have with money. Gatsby started working hard for Dan Cody in hopes of great deals of money; however, when Dan Cody passed away, his gold-digger, ex-wife took all the money and Gatsby was left with nothing. Through Gatsby’s experience with Dan Cody he saw exactly what you could have with money. This is when Gatsby started his crimeful ways to have wealth. Throughout the whole story tho the greatest evidence of the American Dream is Gatsby’s quest for Daisy. This is the moment that Daisy is now tied to Gatsby’s American Dream. “His heart beat faster and faster as Daisy's white face came up to his own. He knew that when he kissed this girl, and forever wed his unutterable visions to her perishable breath, his mind would never romp again like the mind of God”(110.)
