Excalibur John Boorman and Orion Pictures armor up to deliver a spellbinding and vividly electrifying rendition of a classic legend in the 1981 movie Excalibur. The movie begins from the moment the impending King Arthur was conceived, through the rise and fall of Camelot, to the search of the precious Holy Grail alongside the dedicated and virtuous Knights of the Round Table. The primary roles are played by English actors who portray a true representation of some of England’s finest entities. The actors are as follows: Nigel Terry as Arthur; Nicholas Clay as Lancelot; Cherie Lunghi as Guinevere; Paul Geoffrey as Perceval; and Nicol Williamson as Merlin. The opening scene is one of suspense and darkness. The grittiness of the landscape, collective styles of costumes, and array of armor captivates the eye from scene to scene. In addition, dramatic music also adds to the value of the film’s level of suspense. The scene where King Arthur summons his knights to battle joined with German composer Carl Orff’s song, “Oh Fortuna”, was one of my most liked scenes of the movie. Despite the song widely being called “the most overused piece of music in film history”, “Oh Fortuna” delivered in setting the mood. Several scenes were gruesome in nature such as some of the battle scenes where limbs were severed to the undeniably gloomy tree where deceased bodies of King Arthur’s knights suspend from the tree branches.
