In Chimanda Ngozi Adichie’s Freedom to Write lecture she states, “The (United States) intention is good, but refuses to go deep.” America is hypocritical in the sense that they only helps when they have something to gain, America does not actually address and fix the underlying issues, because they don’t know how to fix it themselves. In the sense of they do not like anything that can, or will potential hurt their chances and standing in society. Adichie talks about the difference between American and Nigerian hospitals. In American hospitals they give one a lot of pain medication and ask questions about one’s comfort levels. In Nigerian hospitals they are not interested in one’s comfort, but rather just in the quickest way to treat one. Nigerians expect pain and discomfort to be part of the process of the treatments. Nigerians and many other nations understand that life is not a sugar coated wonderland where hand outs are given. She gives a concrete example of how Americans do not like the feeling or thought of discomfort. Americans find comfort in beautiful lies instead of in ugly truths. Adichie is talking about a general narrative that developed countries do not understand the hardships of less developed countries, because developed countries have more luxuries. America is a developed country therefore the majority of Americans do not understand something like the act of having to walk miles for water. Instead Americans are generally used to getting something with a degrees of ease.
