The purpose of an executive dashboard is to effectively communicate the metrics attached to the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to corporate officers within an organization so that key decisions can be made within an organization. A KPI is a measurable value that demonstrates how effectively a company is achieving key business objectives. Developing effective KPIs drive future business growth by ensuring that the organization has a sustainable competitive advantage over its competition, and that the sustainable competitive advantage can be measured. Executive dashboards can be used to measure the success of these initiatives. The basic idea of the executive dashboard is to be able to communicate the metrics of the KPIs in a less technical way, as the corporate officers may not have a technical background. Therefore, a dashboard for this portion of an organization can include information on how initiatives are being funded, total sales and expenses, changes in sales and expenses from one period of time to another, and how the stock price fluctuates (if the organization is publically traded). A dashboard that would be useful in a research and development division of a pharmaceutical company would outline the effectiveness of patient recruitment in a clinical trial for a particular investigational drug, the adverse events that have shown to be most prevalent in the clinical trial, and the outsourced cost of all of the clinical research organizations that are utilized throughout the trial.
