INTRODUCTION:
Priding itself as one of the nation's leading energy providers, Exelon has truly become a highlight in the energy industry. Turning around $27.4 billion dollars in revenues, Exelon is inching its way up the ladder to become one of the biggest energy producers worldwide.
Originally founded in 1887 and headquartered in Chicago, Illinois, Exelon is renowned as one of the older utility services holding companies. They provide services for energy generation businesses in the United States. Furthermore, they have 32,500 megawatts of owned capacity comprising one of the nation’s cleanest and lowest-cost power generation fleets.
Engaged in the energy generation business on a large scale, Exelon merged with the Constellation Energy Group in March, 2012. They now deal with the 3 key elements of the energy chain: generation, power sales, and delivery. This merger has made the corporation what it is today in terms of size and power. Exelon now operates in 48 states, as well as the District of Columbia and Canada. They employ approximately 26,000 employees and have about $80 billion dollars in assets. Exelon’s utilities deliver electricity and natural gas to more than 7.8 million customers in central Maryland (BGE), northern Illinois (ComEd), and southeastern Pennsylvania (PECO).
Exelon has been the top-ranked electric and gas utility on the FORTUNE 500 each year since 2008. They ranked second among utility companies in Newsweek’s 2014 Green Rankings. Furthermore, they were named to the Dow Jones Sustainability North America Index for the ninth year in a row in 2014. Having the capacity to virtually move small countries is the main reason I chose Exelon to be the subject of my final project proposal.
Since the company at hand deals with the three key elements of the energy chain the commodity is naturally energy. However, energy is too broad of a term and I am going to divide it into the two main components that Exelon provides to consumers: gas and electricity. Electrical generation has been the focus of the group especially since it merged with Constellation. The corporation is utilizing all sorts of methods in electric generation: nuclear, hydroelectric, wind, solar, and gas-fired plants have emerged all over the country.
Generating about 55% of its output from nuclear energy, Exelon provides one of the cleanest forms of electricity that a consumer can buy. With the only by product being nuclear waste, it is the most effective method of electric production. That being said, electricity is
