Examine the different forms of cyberbullying. Cyberbullying is the act of using digital platforms with harmful intentions to harass, threaten, and embarrass an individual. Cyberbullying can manifest in numerous forms, each with varying characteristics. Different types of cyberbullying include: harassment, sending threatening messages, spreading rumours, exclusion, outing, masquerading, trolling and cyberstalking, just to name a few. Despite society’s lack of awareness of the issue and its severity, all these forms of cyberbullying have detrimental effects on one’s mental health, which can lead to depression, anxiety, a sense of shame and loss of self-esteem and worth. Explain why cyberbullying is increasing in Australian society. In Australia, cyberbullying has been on the rise, due to a few main factors leading to it. Factors leading to cyberbullying include: the ability to remain anonymous online, inadequate awareness from schools, normalisation in society and light consequences, even when punishments are necessary (especially in local communities like schools). The Covid-19 pandemic is also viewed as a primary factor as it led to increased uses of the internet and social media in early 2020. Cyberbullying has been a growing concern in NSW for a while now, as through the years and many new cases of cyberbullying, new policies and legislations have been implemented to the NSW law regarding online abuse. As the severity of the issue continued to rise, the need for improved laws grew rapidly. In order to combat cyberbullying in NSW the following provisions can be used: Criminal Code Act 1995 (Cth), Crimes Act 1900 (NSW), Surveillance Devices Act 2007 (NSW) and the Defamation Act 2005 (NSW). Along with these provisions, new policies have been implemented in NSW schools and the education system, to discipline students for a safer educational environment.
