A year after his brother's death, Andrew Jackson was motivated to join a local militia. While in the militia, Jackson was getting the proper training that was required for battle. At only thirteen years of age, Jackson was already getting a feel for military action. However, in 1781, Andrew Jackson and his elder brother were captured and held prisoners by British soldiers. While imprisoned, both Jackson and his brother fell ill due to improper care and negligence. In fact, they fell so ill, that both kids contracted smallpox inside the prison.
