Everyday we make decisions quickly and easily without even noticing. We are able to make these decisions through things like knowledge, memories, emotion, motivation, and experiences. A few concepts that can relate to that are availability heuristic, hippocampus, intrinsic and extrinsic motivation and self-fulfilling prophecy can play a role in decision making. For example, when someone is applying to college these concepts could relate to their decision. The availability heuristic is a mental shortcut often used by the brain. The availability heuristic judges the probability of an event based on the knowledge that is already available in our minds. Most of the time we use the availability heuristic without even noticing it to getting a quick answer we need. When applying to college someone may use the availability heuristic when they see the school is located in a city like New York City where a lot of crime happens and decide not to apply there in fear of them being a victim of a crime. Intrinsic motivation is when you are motivated to do something because you enjoy doing doing it. Extrinsic motivation is when you do something for rewards or to avoid negative consequences. Some may say that intrinsic motivation is better then extrinsic motivation because someone may stick to a task longer because they enjoy it. However, without extrinsic motivation many would not get daily tasks done like going to work, cleaning and exercising. For example, extrinsic motivation would be applying to a better college for academics so that he can get a better job in the long run and make more money. Extrinsic motivation would be picking a college based on location, perhaps close to the beach, so that he will have more fun while attending
