The importance if patient respect and cultural acceptance is discussed within chapter 8. Developing therapeutic relationship with the Lees is in one goal for Fadiman. To reach that goal of trust Fadiman found herself a Hmong interpreter May ying Xiong who helped Fadiman connected with the Lees. Eventually Foua and Kao accepted Fadiman. She respected the Lees for who they are and with sincere to their cultural beliefs. This emphasize greatly on how crucial patient trust is and that it is a two-way communication which demonstrate effectiveness patient to provider relation. Communication is still difficult between the Lees, Neil and Peggy. The lees still carry the thought that they have been discipline by having Lia taken away for noncompliance.
