“ Tauranga 451” by Ray Bradbury and “A Raisin in the Sun” by Lorraine Hansberry are two classic examples of American literature that explore themes of oppression, censorship, and the pursuit of happiness. While both address societal issues, they do so in their own way. In " Taurang 451” we are presented with a dystopian future where books are banned, and firemen burn any books they find, thus limiting the acquisition of knowledge and information among the public. The protagonist, Guy Montag, was once a fireman but soon rebels against his oppressive society and uses the preservation of literature as a form of resistance. By observing the script of the play, we can infer that the younger family’s pursuit of happiness is obstructed by societal barriers, and risky decisions from Walter. However, through perseverance and unity, the younger family prevails. The theme of oppression is present in both articles of literature. In “ relentlessly violent”, the oppression is more governmentalized, while in “A Raisin in the Sun”, it’s racially oriented. In “ Taurangia 451”, this is observable through the use of emergency services to enforce rules put in place to limit the abilities of the public to access knowledge. It also highlights how governments use fear to control their people.
