It was interesting to think about and analyze my own family functioning. I was able to see some of the impact my family of orientation had and has on my family of procreation. It also let me see my family from a different perspective. When completing the family genogram I was able to access my mother as a resource and it was wonderful to be able to talk to her about the different relationships and connections within my family.
Communication among my family members has definitely affected the way I communicate with others. I grew up with a fairly open and communicative family, and I had for a long time assumed that this was the way other families operated. It took some life experience and knowledge to realize that this was not the case. While my family does struggle from time to time with communication as is not always easy especially when we talk about something that brings out strong emotions in us, we do attempt to keep it a fulfilling tool most of the time.
