Dementia has been the most common illnesses that make up the “fifth leading cause of death for individuals of 65 years of age and older in the US,” (Arruda & Olumpia,2017). These symptoms may occur in family members because of inability to communicate with the patient due to their dementia worsening and the need for LTC placement of dementia patient as their illness gets worse. This type of information helped me to inform my current and future nursing practice because as a nursing student I can apply these types of situations to my clinical placement at Sunnybrook hospital at Veterans Centre and also apply in future in hospital setting. As a health care provider, it is our responsibility to assess the family needs, educate and provide information, and to sustain a caring environment to promote family health (RNAO, 2010).
