“Bridge to Terabithia 2” is an example of fan fiction as it is both different and similar to the original text. The fan fiction is very different than the original chapter as it presents a different plot. In the original chapter, Leslie died in an accident and Jess was grieving over her death. But in the fan fiction, Jess was the one who got hurt in the accident and is in the hospital experiencing a coma. In the fan fiction, the author states, “Her best friend survived the initial surgery and was placed in a medically induced coma. Mary Aarons informed them that he was in critical but stable condition”(5). From this we can see that Jess and Leslie had switched places with each other; in addition, Jess is not completely dead but instead on the verge of …show more content…
Comparing it to the original, the fan fiction justifies why Jess has to die and gives him the chance to say goodbye to Leslie. In addition, Jess confesses that Leslie had taught him a lot of valuable lessons and thus gives his life to Leslie in return. These differences in context of the two narratives probably came from the reader’s unsatisfactory of the original chapter as it ended Leslie’s life in an unjustified way. The author decided to make her fan fiction have more closure and less depressing than the original chapter. Despite the differences between the two writing, there are still many similarities between them; such as the theme of the story. Even though it was not shown as clear as it had in the fan fiction, the original chapter still expressed Jess and Leslie’s never ending friendship. When Jess heard about the news that Leslie had died, he panicked and “ran until he was stumbling but he kept on, afraid to stop. Knowing somehow that running is the only thing that could keep Leslie from being dead. It was up to him. He had to keep going”
