Throughout the novel, Mildred is extremely unhappy. Mildred’s unhappiness can be seen in her suicide attempt early in the book. Mildred relies on technology to cope mentally but also physically as the machine brings her back but doesn't prevent or solve the issues leading to her suicide attempt.
