In "Farewell to Manzanar", Jeanne became naturally scared and wary of people because of her father. When Jeanne was younger her father said, "I'm going to sell you to the Chinaman" (Houston 9). This stuck with her and the first time she saw a Caucasian girl, she screamed. Papa has made her untrustworthy of certain people and it stuck with her many other times. Another example was when Papa tried to scare her away from other people's religion, "I think he had already tried to scare me away from the Catholics. That was one of his prime methods of instruction: fear" (Houston 30). Papa tried to scare her away from the nuns and she would run by the Church after school everyday which proves that Papa's method of controlling her had worked. Jeanne
