Fashion design is a highly competitive and creative career. In order to be a fashion designer, someone must be creative and have a vision for detail. People must be able to keep up with trends and make outfits that others want. These, however, are just the base details to being a fashion designer that everyone thinks of. What are the true aspects of fashion design? Fashion designers need a good foundation, work in certain conditions, and must be able to set trends. Fashion designers need to have a good knowledge of the trade. Most people do not just leave school and know how to bring an outfit to life. Most fashion designers have to go to New York or California in order to find a job as a fashion designer. There they work as designers for a label that is not their own. Usually they work full-time. Some, on the contrary, work part-time. Fashion designers usually make from less than $34,110 to more than $126,290 a year. This depends on how good the designer is and if it is his or her own line or not. Most fashion designers work in a studio supplied with the material that they need, such as design tables, sewing machines, and fabrics. Others work in a store for retail or in an office for sales. The designers are then divided into different fields, such as manufacturing, wholesales, management, sales agents and brokers, and specialized designers. Recently, fashion design has turned digital. The digital version makes it easier to fix little things before having made it. About 25% of the all fashion designers are self-employed. A fashion usually sits and researches the upcoming trends and tries to make an outfit that falls into that category. Then once they have a design in mind, they must be able to select the appropriate colors, textures, fabrics, and accessories. They then must be able to carry out the design by making it themselves, or have the communication skills needed to tell others how to make it. There are four types of fashion designers: clothing, footwear, accessory, and costume. Clothing designers design outfits to be worn by men, women, and children. Footwear designers must be able to properly make a fashionable shoe that is able to carry out its function. Accessory designers make complementary items such as handbags, jewelry, and scarves that help highlight the outfit. Costume designers make outfits that are used for stage productions.
