Gisele Mitchell Black Feminist Insurgent Politics April 14, 2024 In this concept paper, I will be discussing the concept of being a “fast-tailed girl” in reference to sexual violence against Black women. Kendall defines “fast-tailed” as being "sexually precocious in some way”, highlighting that the label is used as an insult, a warning, and highly based on perception (Kendall, 1). When being labeled as a “fast-tailed girl” or “fast” one does not need to be sexually precocious at all, the term is given to any girl who engages in behavior that can be perceived as sexual. This ranges from wearing makeup or certain (not always explicitly sexual) clothing to having conversations with boys. Being “fast-tailed” connects to sexual violence against Black women because it is a direct extension of the concept that “bad women” (Black women) cannot be raped or abused in comparison to “good women” (white women) because they are inherently sexual or deserving of violence.…show more content… This concept pertains to modern-day society because the use of the term “fast-tailed” still runs rampant in the Black community and harms the young girls who receive the label.
