Fate Is To Blame In Shakespeare's Romeo And Juliet

In William Shakespeare’s play, the infamous ‘Romeo and Juliet’, many are blamed for the death of the two lovers. There are many people who may fall under this category, of being part of the reason as to why the couple did die, however one which stand out the most in Shakespeare’s play seems to The Capulet family for their aggressive, callous behaviour towards their so called ‘beloved’ daughter Juliet. Another person whom is in the book and is to blame is Friar Laurence for his ignorance and the fact that he had been not informed Romeo of Juliet’s ‘fake death’ earlier. Alongside these characters, another figure to blame in this play is fate, as many in that time believed that fate was unable to be changed, it was a concrete stone in which your life lied upon.

Fate is first mentioned in the story as being against the couple, and that their love is “death-marked” because of the feud between the families, and they will have no control over what happens. Fate is then later mentioned by Romeo says how he felt before the party, where he had first met Juliet and instantly fallen in love with her. Before the party starts, Romeo senses that something bad is happen, something that he had seen in a dream, “I fear, too early, for my mind misgives Some consequence yet hanging in the stars. Shall bitterly begin his fearful date. With this night's revels, and expire the term. Of a despised life closed in my breast. By some vile forfeit of untimely death.” Before Romeo kills Tybalt in a duel, during the play, Romeo is extremely misfortunate and after Tybalt is dead, Romeo declares himself “fortune’s fool”, meaning that fate was responsible for Tybalt’s death, not himself.
