There was rejection after rejection from every religious community that Father Augustus Tolton attempted to join, but he knew in his heart that God was calling for him to be a priest and that there would eventually be a community that would be open to a black seminarian. In 1878, with the help of yet another sympathetic, supportive priest, Augustus registered at St. Francis Solanus College (now Quincy University), where he studied mathematics, science, and literature. After many years of hard work, Father Augustus Tolton, on April 24, 1886, was finally ordained to the priesthood. From then on, Father Augustus Tolton went on many missions to Africa, and around the world to teach underprivileged children that aren’t taught about Christ. From being a slave to being the first African American priest, Father Augustus Tolton’s passion to become a Catholic Priest allows me to realize that even if I have obstacles throughout God’s path for me, I should not give up and keep going, because eventually I will reach the end.
