The book, Number the Stars, is set in Denmark in 1943 during World War II when the Nazi’s were taking and persecuting Jews. The main characters, 10 year old’s Annemarie and Ellen, and their families discover how harsh the world can be. As the war gets worse, Mr. and Mrs. Rosen go into hiding with the help of Peter Neilson, a member of the Danish Resistance, leaving Ellen with the Johansen family. One night, soldiers enter the house in search of the Rosen’s, seeing Ellen they question who she is as she does not have blonde hair like Annemarie and her sister. Mr. Johansen shows a picture of a dark haired baby, which is not Ellen but Lise, Annemarie’s sister that has recently passed, allowing for the soldiers to leave. Soon after, it is decided
