1. How does the 1st scene/chapter attract your interest in the story?

The first chapter introduces Cloudy Bay and reveals the beach and the ‘’Winter light.’’ (pg.1) I became intrigue by the background of the text, as it sounds very much like the beaches in Port Lincoln. As one of the characters describes the sound and smell of the ‘’cold waves’’ (pg.1)
I found myself imagining the background. I immediately became interested through one of the main characters Harry. He talks highly about his brothers, and as the first chapter finishes his ‘family’ life was starting to unfold. As the story continues, I became more interested about his Father as they spoke very briefly about the parent figures in their lives.

Whilst the novel narrates from each of the brother’s perspectives, they all share an element of being caring and lighthearted. I felt as if the characters were very connective and I could not put the book down. The book starts out with the text background very melancholy loneliness about it, but through the characters it is uplifting. I gain the impression the youngest character Harry, relies on his brothers. This is shown when Joe and Miles go surfing how Harry is ‘’afraid that they are leaving him again’’ (pg.1). The character’s in-depth description of the beach, I gain the impression they spend a lot of time there, and it will be a recurring background in the text. Child abuse
Tasmania has recorded more than 10,000 allegation of child abuse between 2010-11. These allegations range from sexual abuse, violence, abused and family issues. Some of these issues are represented in the text ‘’Past the shallows’’

Abalone industry
In Tasmania the abalone industry is over 100 million dollars a year. Tasmania have restricted zones, to help maintain wildlife and environment. There have been serval cases of people with unlicensed or diving in restricted zones. This has become a huge issue for Tasmania fisheries as the areas are being overfished. Favel Parrett presents this issue in the text. Harry’s Father has an expired fishing licence and also dives in restricted zones. 7. Predict what will happen at any point in the novel or flim?
