The Slate article “Why ‘Fed Is Best’ Is Better Than ‘Breast Is Best’” by Elissa Strauss discusses the potential problems and complications that can arise from newborns being underfed due to their mother’s producing insufficient breast milk, but being afraid of or pressured not to give formula because of the arguments from the “breast is best” movement. The arthur discusses specifically the group “Fed is Best,” an organization founded by a doctor (Christie del Castillo-Hegyi) whose son has brain damage after accidently being starved by lack of breast milk and a nurse and lactation consultant (Jody Segrave-Daly) and their goal to encourage mother’s to use formula if a newborn is not getting enough breast milk.

Fed is Best even published a story about Jillian Johnson, whose son Landon died after starving to death due to Jillian not realizing she wasn’t producing milk, despite lactation consultants saying she was breastfeeding fine (Johnson). In a response to these issues, “Fed is Best” have made recommendations that include “ a requirement for mothers to hand express milk before they feed to ensure there is something for their children to eat, twice-daily weighing for exclusively breastfed newborns in the hospital and at home to ensure they aren’t losing a dangerous amount of weight; daily glucose monitoring for newborns
