In Feinberg’s The Interest in Liberty on the Scales, he says that our interest in liberty is to be able to pursue our basic interests because without liberty, we would not be able to do as we wish, and what we want to do, or have interest in, is for our overall welfare. He also says that the interest in liberty is an interest in having as many open options as possible. In other words, we are able to choose to do something or not to do something. Even though the something may be what we want to do, if we do not have the option to not do it, we do not have liberty. In the railroad example that he provided, we can conclude that having many open options is something of value. However, if what you are interested in is not one of the open options,
