Klein began his elementary education with his mother at home, before attending the Gymnasium, a type of school with a big emphasis on academic learning, in Düsseldorf. At the Gymnasium he studied the classics as well as mathematics and sciences. After graduating from the Gymnasium Klein began attending University of Bonn where he studied mathematics, natural sciences, and physics in hopes of becoming a physicist. Since Klein worked closely with Plücker and was his lab assistant he was presented with the task of finishing Neue Géometrie des Raumes. This book of mathematical work lead him to become acquainted with Clebsch, who was a co-founder of Mathematische Annalen, who had moved to Göttingen. Klein made frequent visits to Göttingen, Paris, and Berlin in order to work with Clebsch. During one of his visits France declared war on Prussia and Klein left Paris and ended up having to serve time in the military.
