Female Relative Badge
Description
The ‘Female Relative Badge’ is a metallic badge that has a blue and silver colour. There is a silver royal crown that sits on top of a blue ring that engraves ‘ISSUED BY DEPT OF DEFENCE TO WOMEN OF AUSTRALIA’. In the middle of the blue ring, a bolded text ‘AIP’ stands for ‘Australian Imperial Force’. Below the ring is a silver bar hanging off the badge which represents an additional relative that fought in the war.

Purpose and Use
The ‘Female Relative Badge’ is given to a woman whose relative fought overseas in the war. There are two types of ‘Female Relative Badge’ in the first world war. This particular artefact is given to a woman whose relative fought overseas during the first world war as a ‘soldier, airmen, nurses and masseuses’ in the ‘Australian Imperial Force’. This badge is given to the female relative of the men who were in active service of the ‘Royal Australian Navy’, ‘Australian Military Forces’ and the ‘Royal Australian Air Force’.
There is a badge that is similar to the ‘Female Relative Badge’ called the ‘Mother’s and Widow’s Badge’ that are given to mothers and/ or widows whose loved ones died in the war in the ‘Australian Imperial Force’, ‘Australian Naval’ or ‘Military Expeditionary Force’.
Back then, the ‘Female Relative Badge’ are usually kept with the family relatives, often inside jewellery boxes until worn for ceremonies or for every day. The ‘Female Relative Badge’ represents great pride towards the community as their family contributed greatly to the war. Today in society, most people have passed down the badges to families wearing them on ANZAC day to pay respect to their grandparents and other loved ones who served in the war.
