In order to start the study, a definition of a female serial killer was agreed and recognized. The female serial killer was a woman, acting alone, having at least three victims, the murders took place all at separate times, and was in the United States (Farrell et. al, 2011). In the beginning phase of the study, the information was used where rare crime cases were picked from nonscholarly resources to produce a list of 54 female serial killers, killing without a partner from the United States. There was not a time frame to meet the list of female serial killers. From the list of the female serial killers, 10 cases were randomly chosen from the period prior to 1960 and post 1960 to develop an initial sample of 21 cases (Farrell et. al, 2011). Once the sample was chosen, it was then compare to the sample from Kelleher and Kelleher that they used from their study (Farrell et. al, 2011). All the offenders in the sample that were not in the typology of Kelleher and Kelleher were discarded from the study, leaving 12 offenders. Data was collected by reviewing 282 newspaper articles that discussed 70 homicides committed by the 10 offenders that were selected for the study (Farrell et. al, 2011). However, some information was not included in the data set unless it was found in two newspaper articles. If some of the information collected was lacking, it would be disqualified from the study.
