In this play, Troy's quest is to earn his father's respect. Troy had a rough childhood growing up while he faced abuse from his father. Troy’s father was a very selfish man. Troy stated, “When it comes time for eating. he ate first. If there was anything left over, that’s what you got.” This shows how bad of a father he was. While Troy does not want a relationship with his father, he still respects how he provided for his family, and stayed with them when his mother did not. Troy is very adamant about making money and one could say that that is the most important thing to him.
