Looking back at high school, I can understand how a coach can make or break the future of their athlete. The commitment and support a coach gives can determine this future. Year round I would play field hockey, so I got to know the various characteristics and qualifications of a decent coach. A coach is a leader; they are dedicated and committed. A coach is a teacher; they are passionate about the sport and the success of each player. A coach demands a certain level of play from their team. These standards of play come from respecting the coach and the product of that respect is the outcome of their season. Without respect for the coach, the team will never succeed. Without a coach who is determined and committed, the team will never improve or develop skill.
Through my first three years of high school, I had two different field hockey coaches. Both my freshman and sophomore years I had a coach who knew some of the game but never understood that to motivate you cannot deteriorate a player’s self-esteem or confidence. The constant putting down of

The session was run by various coaches and alumni goal keepers whose alma maters were division one programs. The coaches would start out by doing some basic footwork to get us warmed up and comfortable with the surface, which of course was turf. In Vermont, we don’t have turf on all but two of the local fields so I was not comfortable with the surface. Then one more coach came over sporting a “Colby-Sawyer Field Hockey” shirt and a smiling face. This coach had taught me more in the fifteen -minute goal keeper session than my two coaches had taught me in the previous three seasons. Meet Coach Emily Rinde-Thorson, the one coach who I felt confident about talking to and knew would teach me what I needed to know to become successful and grow as a goal keeper. She was funny, energetic, and would not take a simple mistake. She demanded the best out of
