Figurative Language In Night By Elie Wiesel

The autobiography, Night, by Elie Wiesel, has such a tremendous impact on the reader positively. The author grabbed the reader’s attention to the book through ample amount of ways. First, like most authors, Wiesel even states the description of minor characters in the novel. Next, Weisel shows his changing attitude and belief in God. Additionally, the author states sentences which have a deeper and significant meaning throughout the novel. Then, the author uses various types of figurative language in his novel, such as imagery, symbolism, foreshadowing, etc… Furthermore, the tone of the book begins to change as the book progresses its way toward the ending. Finally, the last sentence of the novel concludes in third person point of view.

Wiesel also uses this literary device to make readers, in seeing a visual idea of the novel. An example of figurative language is imagery. Imagery is when the author uses the five senses to intensify the description of the novel. Weisel states, “A man appeared, crawling snakelike in the direction of the cauldrons. Hundreds of eyes were watching his every move. Hundreds of men were crawling with him, scraping their bodies with his on the stones.”- Night, 59. This quote helps the readers to the visually see the situations the inmates are in. These men are strengthless, trying to get food. Another figurative language that is used in Night is symbolism; the author uses ample quantities of symbolism to bring the novel more lively and convey the meaning that is essentially. Symbolism is when an author uses words or images to represent an idea or theme. Wiesel states, “My soul had been invaded—and devoured—by a black flame.” - Night, 37. This quote represents the ending of Elie’s faith and childhood. The black flame emphasizes the fear and hatred the crematorium caused him to have.
