In class, we watched the film “Food Inc.” which informed us about how local farming businesses are being controlled by a handful of well-known multinational corporations. The health and safety of the animals are often overlooked by the companies, and then further overlooked by the government in an effort to provide cheap food to the nation regardless of any possible negative consequences such as E.coli. From hunting and gathering and even foraging of the past, the advancements in technology have had a negative side effect on the production of food. The global food supply is turning into a crisis due to a lack of biodiversity and safety in food but we can stop this. If the consumers would speak up to the large corporations, we could force them to take the safety of the nation as the number one priority.
From the beginning of the film, it was disclosed that the way we eat has changed more in the last 50 years than it has in the last 10,000 years. Thousands of years ago, people foraged and gathered their food which was free of pesticides and genetically modified organisms. Today, most of our food is treated with pesticides and other chemicals that are not good for us to consume. In the film, it was interesting to learn that the industrial food industry started with fast food with McDonalds being at the head. McDonalds is the largest purchaser of ground beef and potatoes and was developed by the McDonalds’ brothers. The eating of too much McDonalds and other fast food can result in a number of illnesses, one of them being diabetes. With the way we are eating, it is estimated that one out of every three Americans born after the year 2000 will contract early onset
