The fire in Chicago burned from October 8 to October 10 1871. The buildings were mostly made out of wood which made Chicago vulnerable to fire. At first Chicago had 109,00 people, but eventually it grew to more than 1,000,000. The disaster started at the Catherine O’Leary’s barn. The disaster is famous because more than 17,000 buildings were destroyed.

A theory of what happened is that a cow kicked over a lighted lantern but Catherine said that wasn’t the truth and that no one ever found out what really happened. Around 300 people died and we learned that we should use metal or stone to build buildings. After an hour the entire west side of Chicago was burned.

Chicago was one of the most fastest growing cities in America, some extra facts.
