Third Generation Firebird Evolution The third generation of Pontiac Firebirds were the most aerodynamic Firebird to date. The third generation of Firebirds was from 1982 to 1992. They changed throughout those 10 years. Examples of those changes are the body, such as the bumpers, hoods and ground effects. The motors have also changed, for example they originally did not have very many options for a motor, later in the years it got a little more of a selection. Finally the interiors changed, originally they had Recaro seats but eventually got out of that, they also had different gauges from the earlier years to the later years, there were also some other things that changed. The body of the third generation Firebird changed a bit, it was not much but it still changed. The body of the Firebird changed throughout those years, but when it did it was noticeable. In the early years of the third generation, the Firebird’s body was more square, but still aerodynamic. A little later they introduced the “bulge hood” it made the car more aerodynamic and also helped cool the motor. The Firebird was so sleek that it was voted “the most aerodynamic firebird to date”(Pfeifer 1). In about the middle years of the third generation the body really did not change much at all. But in the later years the bumpers rounded out and made the car even more aerodynamic. The …show more content…
Pontiac had a motor that “they wanted to put in the 1982 version but they ended up scrapping that idea”(Wikipedia 3). Early in the third generation they wanted to put a turbo 4.9liter engine in the car but they ended up scrapping that idea at the last second. Instead, they decided to go with a 4 cylinder on most models. In the middle years they were putting 2.8 and 5.0liter engines in the cars. In the later years they used 3 different types of engines, the rare 3.1liter V6, and the not so rare 5.0 and 5.7liter
