Dumas’s mom gave many gifts away that she had brought from Iran. “Between frenzied shopping trips to Sears to buy presents for our relatives back home, my mother spent her last few weeks giving gifts to our American friends” (Dumas 92). Dumas’s mom realized that the American people had shown her so much selflessness, and she wanted to return the favor by giving them a little of Iran. Dumas’s mother loved the Americans so much, she picked out individual gifts for everyone, even though she didn’t understand much English. “‘Dees eez from my countay-ree. Es-pay-shay-ley for you,’ she would explain” (Dumas 92). All of her Californian neighbors showed compassion for the foreigners, and she wanted to give them something special back. The Americans meant so much to the Dumas family, they gave all of their considerate friends a
