The information that sentence contains is important to the story because, Brian cannot eat a bird with its feathers on. He does not want to have to eat the stuff like the heart and stomach. The insides are very nasty and smelly but if he does not get rid of them it will attract unwanted visitors. The last thing that Brian needs is a bobcat trying to get to his cave to eat the birds. Since he bird is what he eats in the story if he can not eat it then he will have a lot of dead birds lying around.

This is important to Brian because it shows it was his ability to recognize things. He only had a few seconds before the tornado hit so his he must not have time to cover his head and neck with his arms. If he had recognized it earlier he would have probably braced himself and Protected his tools more. Still it takes a lot to recognize a tornado. If he thought it was a rescue plane he would have stuck his head out and see blackness until the tornado hit. If he was thrown out of his shelter he would have died but the few in the few seconds he had before the tornado hit he grabbed the rock wall behind him.
