For my experiment I chose to incorporate the essential omega-3 fatty acid supplement into my diet. In particular, I went to Whole Foods and found a pharmaceutical grade fish oil that included 400mg EPA and 200mg DHA that was within my budget. The reason I decided to take a fish oil supplement is because I have heard really good things about it and I wanted to see if in fact it would reduce my instances of brain fog and afternoon fatigue. While I cannot say 100% that this is how it worked for me, because of other matters that are going on in my body like monthly hormonal imbalance (I am pre-menopausal), I do feel like it has made a difference, especially when I take it first thing in the morning before my breakfast. One of the problems I encounter is remembering to take it. The directions say to take it prior to my meal yet despite storing it in plain view on the kitchen counter so it won’t be “out of sight, out of mind”, I still forget. When this happens I do take it anyway, even if it is after my meal, thinking it better than not taking it at all and it has now been a little more than a month since adding this into my diet.
Fish oil supplementation plays an important nutritional role for most Americans because of the lack of omega-3 fatty acids and an overabundance of omega-6 fatty acids in the American diet. With a ratio in the typical American diet of between 20:1 and 50:1, it is all the more important that omega-3 be supplemented in the diet.
Research has shown that omega-3 has many benefits including lowering the risk of coronary heart disease and stroke, improving cholesterol, reducing inflammation, improving cognitive function, and reducing ADHD and autoimmune disorders to name a few. From my own experiment, I am able to say definitively that my cognitive functioning has improved, albeit only in the last week or so.
