How did Fitzgerald dismantle the American Dream in The Great Gatsby? Fitzgerald in the book makes the “American Dream” seem unsuccessful. There were many deaths at the end of the book of The Great Gatsby. Such as Gatsby, Myrtle and George. Fitzerald does this to show that they all chased their dreams until their death. And failed over the stimulation of money, instead of pure ideas. For example, Mr. Gatsby. He started off poor and worked hard to get all the things he had. In the book the great gatsby, on page 168 it states, “If he lived, he'd been a great man. A man like James J. Hill. He’d helped build the country”. Gatsby worked until he died. Even when he did die, he wasn't happy. And this is why Fitzgerald made the “American Dream” unsuccessful.
