The five phases of a quest are a quester, a place to go, a stated reason to go there, challenges and trials en route, and a real reason to go there.

The key points are first with a quester. He or she is just a person who goes on a quest, whether or not he or she knows it’s a quest (unaware of what they are doing). This is the start of their journey. Second is someone tells the protagonist, which is perceived as heroic, to go somewhere and do something for their or their country's honor because he or she is "doing the right thing". Next is the quester going through trials and tribulations on the journey which usually include the protagonist being frustrated or confused.
