The first thing to encounter in a growth mindset is the ability to think differently about oneself by turning something negative into a positive. This is what brings a big barrier between a growth mindset and a fixed mindset. The article Brainology, Carol S. Dweck stated in a fixed mindset students tend to think working hard meant that you did not have the ability, and that things would come naturally to you if you did (page 2). A fixed mindset means that every time something is hard for them and requires effort, it’s both a threat and a bind (Page 3). In school I worked hard on any and everything thing I have ever done, even if it was a challenge for me. The reason I kept pushing was that I knew I was going to get somewhere in life. I felt as though if I continued to do the same things that I already knew that I wasn’t learning anything. Strategies comes with the ability to take responsibilities in a setback. It is not always what happened during the setback or what caused the setback, but what you do after that setback. The article pointed out those with a fixed mindset of a setback in school would say and feel that they felt dumb so they study less and put less time and dedication into turning things around into a better situation (Page 2). In school there were plenty of times where I fell short on a test but I never gave up, especially in my math class. I found different study methods in different classes to help me succeed in school. I found out that asking questions and asking for help got me a long way in school.
